Costa Ceramic Bowl

$70.00

WHY WE LOVE IT
Smooth to the touch, sculptural at the handles, and finished in the kind of earthy tones that only fire and clay can make — this Costa Ceramic Bowl is as much a piece of art as it is a piece for your table.

It was made by Otilia Reyes Domínguez, an award-winning ceramicist from Cachán de Echevarría — a small coastal town on Michoacán's Pacific coast with deep Afro-Mexican roots and a pottery tradition that predates Spanish colonization by thousands of years.

Otilia works the way her grandparents taught her: no glazes. Just locally-sourced clay, hands that know the form, and river stones used to polish each piece to its signature smooth finish. The technique is pre-colonial and nearly unchanged — one of the few that survived.

Beautiful for serving fruit, displaying on open shelves, or bringing quiet, natural texture to your table.

Because each bowl is fired by hand, no two are exactly alike. Slight variations in tone and finish are part of what makes yours, yours.

Otilia Reyes Dominguez — Cachan de Echeverria, Michoacán
Maestra Otilia and her family continue the rich burnished pottery traditions of their Afro-Mexican community that go back thousands of years, before Spaniards introduced glaze. Each piece is shaped, burnished, and finished entirely by hand using locally sourced clay and techniques rooted in generations of craftsmanship. No glaze is used in making their pieces, staying true to their ancestral traditions. Their work reflects the warmth, resilience, and cultural heritage of coastal Mexican pottery traditions.

  • Clean: Rinse occasionally with warm water and gently scrub away any soap residue using a soft brush or cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives to preserve the natural clay finish.
  • Dry: Let the dish air dry completely before storing. This keeps the clay strong and prevents moisture buildup.
  • Avoid Prolonged Water Exposure: Barro is a natural, porous material — while durable, it’s best not to leave it soaking in water in the sink for long periods.
  • Handle with Care: Each piece is handmade and unique.
