Black Clay Vase & Candle Holder

$40.00

Why We Love It
This handcrafted black clay (barro negro) piece is a multi-purpose object that serves as either a candleholder or dry flower vase. Its versatile design allows it to function as a dried flower vase, perfect for displaying delicate stems, or as a candle holder to create a warm, cozy ambiance.

Shaped by hand and baked in an underground wood fire of thick black smoke, which gives the pieces their black special color. The scalloped top adds a unique texture, while the smooth finish highlights the natural beauty of Mexican barro negro.

Whether styled on a table cloth, dining table, or shelf, this piece blends effortlessly with any décor, offering a subtle nod to traditional craftsmanship.

Familia Ortiz

BARRO NEGRO CERAMICS

For four generations, the Familia Ortiz have been crafting barro negro, a revered Oaxacan black pottery tradition. Their artistry not only preserves this time-honored craft, but also sustains 10 families in their community.

Hand-shaped in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Barro Negro (meaning "black clay") is known for its deep, smoky hue, and natural sheen. This ancient pottery dates back to the Monte Alban period (500 BC), where it was originally crafted into jars and vessels. Today it remains a living tradition of Zapotec and Mixtec artisans, embodying centuries of cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
