Hijita

Oaxacan Spice Drinking Chocolate

$13.00

WHY WE LOVE IT
Hijita, a Latina chocolatier, created this Oaxacan Spice Drinking Chocolate as a luxurious homage to our chocolate traditions. Artisanally crafted with 55% single-origin, roasted and unfermented Oaxacan cacao. Expertly spiced with Mexican-grown cinnamon and vanilla bean, both sustainably sourced from Veracruz. A hint of Mexican sea salt from Colima adds the perfect balance. This ready-to-make powdered chocolate is a piece of Mexican heritage in a cup.

This is extremely rare and special cacao, sourced directly from the plots of Dionisia Garcia, a beacon of guardianship for cacao in the mountains of Chinantla, Oaxaca. Doña Dionisia comes from generations of guardians of the Oaxacan cacao legacy. She grows cacao sustainably in her agroforestry plot, alongside other native trees such as the pataxte, the achiote, the chicozapote, mamey and banana trees.

Born and raised between borders, from her birth city of Laredo, TX to her mother's native Nuevo Laredo, MX, Ashley Ugarte grew up surrounded by her family's rich cultural and traditions. As a chocolate lover from day one, Ashley's favorite tradition was sipping on traditional Mexican hot chocolate while making tamales with her family. She attributes her vision for Hijita to the strong matriarchs in her life, her mother, abuelitas and her only sister. Prior to founding Hijita, Ashley was head chocolatier at Dandelion Chocolate, a world-renown bean-to-bar chocolate company based in San Francisco, where she co-spearheaded the launch of their award-winning confections program.
